An album review on "Bonbasteh Andisheh", Khak's latest
album/ 2006.
Believe it
or not, our Iranian rock music is getting mature and professional day by day.

Khak is actually
a one-man project since the original members of the band broke up and Shahriar Khatam continued the Khak project on his own with other musicians. At first I
was not sure about how the result will turn out on this album. But now I can
proudly say; you did it again Shahriyar.
Khak had
already in their first album established a Khaki Classic rock sound but with
too much influences from Pink Floyd. Even if I liked their stuff, I never
believed that they had reached to a very professional level of quality both
musically and lyrically. In this album, "Bonbast-e
andisheh" (Impasse of mind) Shahriyar
Khatam shows what a great musician he is. Christian Schimansky, who has also played western guitar, bass and
some slide guitar on the album, has produced the album. That is probably why we
are witnessing a great piece of Iranian rock music album with a great
production. It is nice to see that our musicians are realizing that being a
good musician is sometime not good enough. A professional producer is most of the
time the solution to their creative problems in the recording process.
The most
important thing that I should point out here is that Khak
has saved it's Classic rock sound but left its badly
Pink Floyd influences behind and has produced that original Khak
sound that we all have been waiting to hear in an album like this. Shahriyar Khatam has also been
responsible for the lyrics too. The lyrics in this album express some serious
subjects in their contents but in some cases like "
My
favourite track is "Ta be key". This track
has every thing that makes a nice soft/ rock song. It has a beautiful blues sound
with a lyric that flows over the melody with a message and the attitude that
matches with the whole concept of the track. Interestingly they have used the
sound of Sittar that also has been played by the
producer "Christian Schimansky" and the Sittar sound fits in to the whole composition so nicely
that it gives a different dimension to the track. This song is in my opinion a
perfect Persian soft rock song that has some sort of hidden aggression with a
deep political message that concerns all of us as humans and particularly as
Iranians. And Shahriyar, your voice rocks!
"Bon
baste andisheh" is an album with 8 tracks, which
is released in three different languages; Persian, English, German. It means
that album has the same music but in different languages, which is a smart way
to release an album in the international music market.
At the end,
"Bonbaste Andishe"
as a whole is a collection of great classic rock songs that you just want to
listen to repeatedly. A collection of briliant
romantic rock songs from a great idealist and musician. "Bonbaste Andisheh" is the
best album that Khak has produced till now but I know
that the next album will be the greatest.
Shahriyar,
keep on rocking our minds and souls.
